Problem is not identity whatever, lol why do y'all still push this? Trump had a massive cyber disinformation campaign, the help of WikiLeaks, and STILL got crushed in the popular vote, against one of the least likeable candidates that's ran. On top of that he's acted like a psycho since he got in office. And finally, the issue was voter turnout.

Plus is Bannon got canned? There goes the 'base'.
All politics are identity politics.

Steve Bannon is right. Identity Politics created the opening for Trump to become President. To win in 2020 against Pence( Trump will either be impeached or quit before then ) the Dems need to focus on how to rebuild the American Dream for all Americans. The Obama phenomena will not happen again for a while. IMO, the message has to be equally as strong as the candidate. It may take another outsider like an older famous actor or retired athlete to deliver that message. Politicians covet too much baggage to do so.
That would be Al Franken. Funny, charismatic, and his state has one of the best economies in the nation. I'd like to see him run but I believe he said he's not interested in running.
