I definitely call, and depending on the job, I'll send thank you letters as well. I went to one place that had paper applications :blessed:, filled it out, asked to see the manager and gave it to her. I had an interview the next day and started at the end of the week. The online job market is what really makes it hard to find a job IMO. If it's for a particular location, a lot of the times I'll still go in. It puts a face with the name and shows you really want the job. Anybody can copy/paste a resume into an online application, but only a few will make the time to come in and speak. Unless of course they explicitly ask you to not call lol.

What's the negative to it? It's your time. Either you call and they are essentially forced to look at your application and they hire or don't hire you, or you don't call and they completely ignore your application.

I try to tell this to so many people coming up getting there foot in the door. People will hire someone who they like or can relate over the faceless masses of qualified online apps.
