:dwillhuh:

Why did you quote me?

Juneya suggesting Pluto is a star was wrong. It, of course, has been classified as a dwarf planet.

However, his point was well taken--since I was a kid scientists had been saying Pluto was a planet, and now all of a sudden, it's not. Makes you at least wonder what is it that we know and what is that knowledge based on. The science community just came up with a definition for what a planet actually is 5 or 6 years ago. :skip:

Anyway, this thread was comedy. :ahh:

Our understanding of space is clearly fluid and evolving. I don't know why nikkas was shyttin' on Juneya for saying that when I think most people thinking reasonably about it would say the same.

they just refined the definition of a planet and that excluded pluto. its not that big of a deal.

exactly.
It's not that we didn't know what planets were before or that the change was so dramatic. Pluto is way the hell on the outer rim of our solar system, turns out it's hard to pinpoint shyt way out there, especially in the past. Now that we have identified other object larger than pluto that were not planets it gave rise to a serious question. Should these other objects be planets or perhaps pluto isn't a planet. The definition of a planet was run up against pluto and turns out that it doesn't really apply as a name.

They wanna act like pluto just up and disappeared or something.

It's like calling a point guard a center for years and then realizing that he's bringing the ball up, passing and playing at the top of the key for the majority of the game, so you decide to call him a point guard. This b*stard want's to act like in doing so he found some great evidence as to why space is a theory :snoop:

I quoted you because you said Post #44 was dope. Meanwhile, dude's last paragraph is embarrassingly ridiculous. Nothing "dope" about 9/11 conspiracies either.

"All of a sudden" Pluto isn't a planet? What is the knowledge based on?

In the late 1970s, following the discovery of minor planet 2060 Chiron in the outer Solar System and the recognition of Pluto's relatively low mass, its status as a major planet began to be questioned.[14] In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, many objects similar to Pluto were discovered in the outer Solar System, notably the scattered disc object Eris in 2005, which is 27% more massive than Pluto.[15] On August 24, 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) defined what it means to be a "planet" within the Solar System. This definition excluded Pluto as a planet and added it as a member of the new category "dwarf planet" along with Eris and Ceres.[16] After the reclassification, Pluto was added to the list of minor planets and given the number 134340.[17][18] A number of scientists hold that Pluto should continue to be classified as a planet, and that other dwarf planets should be added to the roster of planets along with Pluto.

That took about 9 seconds to find. Not quite "all of a sudden" like some dude flipped a coin one afternoon.
