The judge after the trial said his history of reckless driving is the reason he couldn't in good conscious give him the minimum.
This is like the first time a white teen gets sentenced properly for murder in a long time in a high profile case.

Judges always talk during sentencing, he walked through the sentencing guidelines and the reasoning behind the application. It's required if there's an attempted appeal.

You still didn't answer my question. This isn't even about color because we know if this kid was black he'd get life without parole. My question is what does any of this shyt accomplish in our prison system. Yes he ended two lives and it's awful, but he's also essentially child. 18 year olds are basically children.
We focus so much on the "punishment" aspect but wtf does it actually accomplish?
I agree with what you're saying but sentences like this are more for public safety, punishment, and deterrence than they are for rehabilitation.
In this case, the repeated speeding tickets and the like are proof that his behavior was likely to continue even after he killed a mother and her daughter. There's no winning in this situation.

Right, I agree with the jail time aspect honestly, but I don't agree with the length. Especially since the only things our prisons do is make you even more of a criminal then when you went in.
As for the second part, isn't this where we need to focus on rehabilitation and getting that shyt out of his system? His repeated awful decision making due to him being this young kid who thinks he's invincible resulted in tragedy. Now wouldn't it be time to make sure that doesn't happen again and make him and others like him people who can actually operate in society rather than dooming them to a life of nothingness?

There’s some shyt you can legit justify to yourself ( even if no one else is trying to hear it ), in regards to taking another persons life... Racing down pedestrians when there’s race tracks somewhere in proximity that are designed for that is just dumb and an unnecessary risk for too many people that aren’t involved...
