Pre-Obama, you'd often hear that phrase, "Republicans are the party of Lincoln" from cacs and c00ns alike. People deliberately ignore that parties in America were even more divided, right after the Civil War until Barry Goldwater won the GOP primaries in 64, there were two factions in the Republican party:

The Black & Tans: a multiracial faction that arose from the Radical Republicans (those are the Republicans Black folk voted for in droves until Nixon's first term)

and

The Lilywhites: a mostly white faction that was made up of more "moderate" () Republicans, Southerners who felt betrayed by the democrats/disappointed with the Dixiecrats and wealthy whites

The GOP you see today is the party of Goldwater
