Scorpion and Sub Zero were from rival ninja clans. Scorpion was sent on a mission by the necromancer Quan Chi and was slain in battle by Sub Zero. Quan Chi slaughtered Scorpion's clan. Two years later, Quan Chi resurrected Scorpion into the hellspawned spectre we all know and love, and told him that Sub Zero was the one responsible for his clan's destruction. In the storyline for Mortal Kombat 2, it is revealed that Scorpion killed Sub Zero in MK1 and participates in the second tournament to discover why his rival appears to have been resurrected. He discovers that the MK2 Sub Zero is actually MK1 Sub Zero's younger brother and vows to atone for the death of the first SZ by protecting the second.
In MK4 (the first game in which Quan Chi appeared), Quan Chi informs Scorpion that Sub Zero 2.0 has killed his wife and child, reigniting the bloodfeud between the two ninja. Eventually, the truth is revealed that Quan Chi is the one who killed both Scorpion's clan and his family.
