A lot of artists are respected but not successful and vice versa. Success is relative so I am talking about large success. There are artists breaking records but at the same time losing the credibility their music once had. I personally would like to be in a Jay-Z position where the respect and success can go hand in hand. Im sure most artists feels the same way.

Mariah once said:

"Mary doesn't have to sell 28 million records to be respected -- people respect Mary, and I just want to be respected like her."

What does op mean? "What I prefer artists to have?" "What I would like if I was an artist?" Explain

I see a lot of posters defending artists with numbers more than the music itself. Seems like a good population believe numbers = quality. Maybe they would be able to defend their stance.

So you mean "when I judge an artist what's more important to me how much they are respect or how much they have sold/cash they have?"

yea that could work.

I'd be open to leave the topic open for interpretation for all POV's.

It's a bit of a hazy question many people "respect" sales, so it's not mutually exclusive. If the question is music quality vs sales, then its quality every time. I can't listen to an artists platinum plaques, I can only listen to their work. It only becomes a problem if a great artist sells so badly that they can't continue making music, or a new artist would be great but they're not marketable.

Give me success... I could care less if I'm respected if I'm making bank

OP means your opinion on other artists, not you personally.

Also it's "couldn't care less" not "could care less" :hubie:

If I could pay my bills doing something I love then I would be in the 5% of people on the planet. I would be good with that.

People actually being affected positively and respecting my shyt would be icing on the cake especially if there's a passion and respect for the craft to begin with

respect will leave you broke and everyone's laughing cause you talk about how you was the man 7 years ago.

i think thats the other way around

way more people achieve crazy success and are a joke a couple years later

Currensy is one of the most respected artists in hiphop whose rep is bulletproof yet he never went platinum.
