African Americans, also referred to as Black Americans or Afro-Americans, are citizens or residents of the United States who have total or partial ancestry from any of the native populations of Sub-Saharan Africa.

African Americans constitute the second largest racial and ethnic minority in the United States. Most African Americans are of West and Central African descent and are descendants of enslaved blacks within the boundaries of the present United States.

Also, there were certain blacks who were here in the United States before slavery, and some who migrated to the States.

I think that Black folks in America that ancestors came here during the slave trade should be called Afro-Americans and not African American. Black folks have been apart of this country and culture for hundred of years since the beginning. When I think of African Americans I think of first or second generation Nigerians or any other African country. Every other place puts an Afro in front of it to symbolize there black heritage, Afro-Brazilians and Afro-Cuban. There is a cultural difference from a black person born here, but who parents immigrated from Ghana and a black person that family lived in Georgia since the 1600s.

Japan, but from the 989
Is there any room for saying Afro-Native American? My Grand Dad was 100% Native American and my Grand mother was half Native and half African American. I've never really cared what people called me because I was brought up to worry about other things in life. If I had a preference I would just like to be called Black American. Or American. I was never really exposed to my African American ancestors religion while on the other hand I got to experience a small bit of my grand father's religion. He was real quiet about it but he would talk about his mother going to the Black Hills to worship. I guess that's why I'm kind of like a free agent on the religion. But back to the point, I always felt weird when people would say, "As an African American, how do you feel about race?" lol it just sounds funny to me.

you want to be synonymous with a "hair" style versus you actual origin? Wouldn't a Ghanaian in the States be Ghanaian American? You want your history to start/stop with slavery?
