Not necessarily. I'm not saying that what Gwen Stefani does is original, but the artists that say around are artists that are able to change styles. It doesn't mean that they are unoriginal, it means that they are smart enough to know that fans get bored of the same thing. If they want to stay around for the long haul and remain relevant, sometimes that means switching up their style.
