I don't know about overrated, he's pretty consistently lived up to the hype (whether you like "I" or not), and he has made pretty valiant efforts to push more MCs (including the aging ones) to try harder.
His albums are fantastic, as are his mixtapes, raps over other rapper's tracks, and his radio freestyles.
His cypher verses continue to outshine his peers, and he's tried out different flows and styles. He's also usually the best rapper on a song, think Power Circle, or 1 Train (though that is debatable).
If there were more artists of this generation showing this level of skill at the beginning of their career, he wouldn't get this much hype. Yet, its pretty much Big K.R.I.T., his labelmates (Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q), Danny Brown, Joey Badass, and a few others that are putting up this level of work.
Forgot to add Los and newcomers like Astro and Logic.

Kendrick is dope...I do agree people go a little too overboard but he's one of the more talented rap artists out today.
