The superbowl is an event where people gather for ONE GAME to basically drink their ass off, watch crazy commercials, watch an over the top half time performance, and eat shtty food. The game is bigger than sports itself at this point. Its a spectacle. It cant at all be compared to a series of games for other leagues...To that point, if the NFL was *that* popular, then why dont playoff game ratings match that of the sb, or even come close to it? SB is a whole 'nother marketing entity unto itself.

A single, one time event just lends itself to more casual, mainstream viewers. Hats off to the NFL for exploiting that sensibility, and also the marketing the violent, exciting nature of the game. Other leagues just cant compete.

Imagine the NFL having a 82 game season and four rounds of 7 game series and lets talk ratings then.

At the highest level of play, basketball > football

I didnt say they didnt get high ratings...I said there is a huge difference between divisional playoff games, and the Superbowl. Same games were even down this year from years past.

NFL weekend TV ratings predictably huge, but not up

And again, thats incorporating the huge advantage the NFL has over other leagues, because they have just a handful of games, that people can concentrate on...games that all come on during the weekend, conveniently enough.

On the flip side if the NBA just did games on Sunday, Monday, and occasionally Thursday an Saturday. Do you still think NBA ratings will be higher than the NFL?:rudy:

Super Bowl Ratings: CBS Coverage Down From Last Two Years - TVNewser

Another year, another huge ratings night for the Super Bowl.

CBS’ coverage of Super Bowl XLVII delivered an estimated 108.4 million viewers, according to preliminary ratings from Nielsen. That is not a record audience, and is short of the last two Super Bowls. That said, it makes last night’s game the third most-watched Super Bowl of all time (and the third most-watched event in TV history), behind only the 2011 and 2012 games. In 2012 111.3 million people watched the New York Giants defeat the New England Patriots on NBC, narrowly beating out the 2011 Super Bowl on FOX, when 111 million watched the Green Bay Packers defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Metered market ratings pegged the game at drawing a 48.1 rating, up from last year. That did not include coverage during the blackout, which was classified separately.

The Super Bowl has firmly entrenched itself as the biggest TV event in the U.S., easily surpassing any regularly-scheduled TV show, as well as special events like the 2012 election. According to Nielsen 77 million people watched the 2012 election, across 13 networks. By comparison, the Super Bowl averaged 108 million on exactly one network: CBS.

The AFC/NFC championships had 47.7 mil and 42.6 mil this year respectively (48.7 and 57.6 last year). Look across any sport and you'll see that the ratings for rounds that come before the finals/championship are never as high as them. Championships produce more mainstream/casual fans.

where the hell are you getting those ratings from, breh?:comeon:

As you can see the ratings for the championship games and the SB arent even close. That gap is accounted for by people who have no interest in sports. How many sports fans miss the NFC/AFC championship games? So the 27 rating, to me, is more of an accurate reflection of the NFL's popularity, among sports fans, which isnt that far off from the other leagues especially when you aggregate the ratings for all the games in a series.

I give the NFL props for creating that environment tho.

For the life of me I will never understand why people feel the need to align themselves with certain celebrities or brands. Okay actually I completely understand I just think it's sad. :heh:

TV ratings down for NFL conference title games - Yahoo! Sports

And none of the other sports are even close to a 27 rating if you used that number in ratings

League is 70% black :mjpls:

But you do have the Brees, Mannings, Rodgers, Brady, Big Ben and etc performing well at the glamour position.:manny:

That's why I think it is silly to say if the NFL and NBA switched their scheduling, the NBA will draw NFL apex-type ratings without considering other factors that add to the appeal of the NFL.
