for the same reason why Charles Barkley is on TNT. The leagues DON'T run the networks and it's understood that whatever they say isn't reflective of or shared by the company.

What does that have to do with anything? They're there to give their opinions, not protect the shield. The NBA can't regulate on Simmons, shyt ESPN can barely regulate on Simmons without compromising their desire to remain affiliated with Grantland. Now it's a lot more difficult to go in on the NBA on NBATV, but not on channels where they're not being paid to blow the brand.
