SURVEY: U.S. Afro-Latinos More Likely to Identify as White Than Black

Self identification is such a strange topic.

Everyone seeks to be part of a bigger group or community. Meanwhile, people come up with rules to keep others out of bigger groups/communities.

this is confusing, it says 24% of Latinos in the US identify as Afro-Latino, but only 18% of Afro-Latinos identify as being black?

The way the survey is worded is weird, and so are the results...to some extent. I am the son of Black Guatemalans I despise the term "Afro-Latino" and identify as Black or Garifuna , that term should be thrown in the bushes.

I used to fukk with this young dominican and she was proud to consider herself black, it was beautiful . Until I found out why.... Only the blacks fukked with her and the latino hair places didnt know what to do with her hair. They would clown her in spanish as a girl not knowing she understood every word. afro latinos need to only check hispanic.....they don't check black because: black = African-American to most of them......... They're not doing it due to self hate, rather cultural affiliation....

So what? Why are some of you so determined to make people claim they're black? Most of these "afro-latinos" are mixed. I mean its one thing if you're latino and black as fukk saying you're white, but a lot of these "afro latinos" are so mixed up that saying they're black is just as wrong as saying they're white. Its also important to remember that the one drop rule doesn't exist in South America.

is the average Afro Latino really that mixed up though? e most these Afro Latinos i googled from random latin countriese look black to me

It's not hatred for us, its hatred for themselves. It's self hatred, which comes from not being in touch with your history.

The self hatred that SOME Afro Latinos have can't be compared ton the hatred that some whites have for blacks.

The hatred is rooted from two different sources.

Exactly, you can't blame a group for not identifying with something they don't know about. How can you have pride in a concept that is seen as a negative? They didn't grow up seeing black faces on their television, many were even denied access to various services because of their skin tone. And you expect them to be proud of it now? lol.

Spanish and Portuguese colonization did a real number on peoples heads. If you think white supremacy sucks in a first world country, imagine living in the third world with it(latin america).
