That’s what social media and all the online spaces do. People play into all the damn time. We nullify the impact and meaning words and labels, because we twist them to fit trending narratives. When you start using words incorrectly and applying them out of context they get co-opted and twisted whether through ignorance or intentional manipulation that it all becomes the “boy who cried wolf territory”. The worse part is these narratives start from one or a few people’s opinions and those opinions become the framing in which these stories get told. If that framing is wrong or can’t be proven, then it just becomes much ado about nothing. When that happens enough times, no one cares anymore. That’s where the real danger is
