If you actually lived through that wave you'd remember that even back then it was kinda corny. Tv shows/movies and the cocaïne era kinda made the esthetic outlive it's creative lifespan but it was never that exciting to begin with.

Yeah, a load of it is so boring and derivative but what got me thinking was the whole fake past nostalgia for kids that weren't even born then.

That is something new in the game as no other generation did (or could do?) it like this. For those of us who were there the difference between the real and imitation is obvious as they're just churning one isolated section again and again.

When it does hit though its quite delicious.
good thread, that midnight sunset song mustve been catchy to you

another good one

Good for vibes sometimes but as others have said, it can get very repetitive. I do find it interesting that I've never met anyone that lived through the 80s as an adult, and were nostalgic about it. Seems like it's the younger gen (myself included), romanticizing that shyt based on music videos, TV shows, etc, from that decade.

I'm surprised this hasn't gone mainstream yet as its been bubbling for a minute. Or maybe it has because I don't listen to the radio like that. And by that I mean have a streaming account and peep what everyone else is being fed.

Still got an onion on my belt. It was the style, you see? Do dig the evocative moods of the tracks though, especially ones with vocals:

A lot of them vibe really well. You've just got to sift through the crap to find them.

I prefer when vaporwave was vintage and cats were using the more authentic sounds, but it's still dope. I actually thought the genre been fading as a ton of tutorials were around back in 2019 teaching how to make it and everyone jumped on the trend then.

Man, if you wanna take it there I still vibe to cracktro chiptunes.

Sythwave is like a sideways evolution of these jams but nowhere near as creative as these dudes were on a whole nother level for what they worked with and how catchy they made it sound.

It’s horrible. And this recreating music from genres before your time is nothing new. People do the same thing with soul music. Be some 21 year old nikka talking about, I’m using the same mic that Fats Domino used, or making they shyt purposely sound like the old soul classics. Even down to the aesthetic. All that recreate the past music the exact way it was type shyt usually come off gimmicky as fukk. nikkas wanna be in the 70s and 80s so bad
I think this depends on the amount of importance you place on music or artists being cutting edge.

I only like disco revival soul shyt

Stuff from black producers who went to Japan and helped make city pop

Breakbeat

That’s the only revival shyt I like.

I second the psytrance if it sounds like ajurika the Tekken/ridge racer music producer

Synthwave is corny to me. And it all sounds the same. Just cold, sterile, and soulless.

That's kinda the point. A lot of it depicts a dystopian future where 99% will be poor and Corporations will have dictatorship control. Think Judge Dredd, Blade Runner 2049. And it seems like we're headed in that very direction.

Some of it can be corny, but on the other hand it makes good night driving music.
