Hate that post nostalgia with kids reminiscing about the 90s. It was ok but today is way better.

I hear a lot of it in rap. They already did it improve on it.

Tbh the only rapper I've heard that takes that 90s style to another level is Payroll Giovanni. The other guys are stuck in the 90s

What's makes today way better than the 90s?

Man, if you wanna take it there I still vibe to cracktro chiptunes.

Sythwave is like a sideways evolution of these jams but nowhere near as creative as these dudes were on a whole nother level for what they worked with and how catchy they made it sound.
man this warmed my heart, i was a scener back in the day

one of the groups you posted CORE would just ask random ppl in their irc to come up with a chiptune for the next few months of releases... on some death row records "battle to get a verse on this pac song" shyt

here's an archive of cracktros to feast on... i know what my playlist's looking like today :ahh: Keygenjukebox Complete collection: Internet Archive

another big archive: prodlist :: pouët.net

I would say drive was the big reason it got popular again. The shyt far cry blood dragon, hotline miami, hell, even strangers things more than 1974 or Murphy's shows

Clearly Drive is the movie that got the whole synthwave/vaporwave thing popping. Hence the estethic of it being somewhat cold and bleak. So those hating for being "souless" are asking to be something it isn't supposed to be. It's Nicolas Wending Refn cold. Also it's more retro-futurism than "just" nostalgia about a past that these kids didn't know, which is why actual people from the 80s aren't the ones doing/listening to it. "The future isn't what it used to be" could be the mantra of this genre basically. It's been around for at least 10 years now, it's popularity also has a lot to do with soundcloud/blog era where people were looking for different stuff from the mainstream and semi-obscure niche music. Cloud rap and synthwave are basically two sides of the same coin imo.

Oh, I know the scene. I know the scene. Still got IRC commands etched in my awareness from back when it was about zero second. F zero day. The group wars were crazy and the chat was wildly entertaining as it was like a proto-Coli in terms of the F-ery people got into, on and off the keys, as folk would just speak the real so freely.

That was the true digital community and way before that there was mail trading where C90s of fresh leaks and disks that looked mighty cracky would spin around the globe as we'd speak on hacked PBXs in between as groupies wanted shoutouts on the intro...

Captain Crunch up in this piece!

Usually its made by modern kids looking back at the 80s aesthetic with modern eyes combined with some futuristic techno-dystopia thrown in:

Basically a hybrid of the real 80s, the movies they made about the future and the current times. What gets my attention is this recreation of a past that doesn't exist for those that didn't live it. Quite interesting, yes? Speaks about the coming digital world full of recreations...

Can you get jiggy with this?

so you just typed in synthwave on youtube and this stuff came up?

Yeah. Pretty crazy, isn't it?

Back in the actual 80s you'd have to submit a research request at the library, wait for the microfiche, pore through the pages and hope you find what you seek then request them to transfer in a copy so you could listen eventually.

Kids these days...

I’ve been dipping into the synthwave pool on and off in the last year. Honestly I don’t drive, but I’d I did that’d definitely be my go to tunes at night

I’ve been revisiting a lot of 90s techno (trip hop, drum and bass) I was into when I was younger. I’d like to see some newer takes on those

The Cyberpunk wave is worth checking as well. Its a lot harder and heavy on the tech dystopia:

Like Synthwave this can be very repetitive in large doses because everyone recycles the same sounds, especially kicks, with similar melodies and BPM. But when it hits it does.

Synthwave isn't new. Ppl been making it since like 2005, by ppl who were born in the 80s and 90s. Youtube used to be flooded with it. That and Linkin park. Its arguably got better.

Edit: most of whats posted is vaporwave.

It’s horrible. And this recreating music from genres before your time is nothing new. People do the same thing with soul music. Be some 21 year old nikka talking about, I’m using the same mic that Fats Domino used, or making they shyt purposely sound like the old soul classics. Even down to the aesthetic. All that recreate the past music the exact way it was type shyt usually come off gimmicky as fukk. nikkas wanna be in the 70s and 80s so bad

Nah you wrong. Hella folks was doing cocaine off them type of beats.
