Depends on the definition because some might say Lauryn Hill and the whole Soulquarian movement filled that lane back in the day even though they had more mainstream hits.

I think Tik Tok has given alternative type acts tons of visibility that wouldn't have been as common during the MTV era. Steve Lacy, for example, got a number 1 song this year off the strength of how widespread Bad Habit was on Tik Tok.

The people who like alternative sounding R&B, hip hop, rock, and pop in general tend to be bigger diehard fans of the artists than those who check for run of the mill mainstream artists. Tyler's latest album, for example, wasn't played on the radio like that or and wasn't as radio friendly as Igor but Tyler still had the highest selling rap tour of 2021 iirc and he sold tons of vinyl off of it too. The alternative/indie lane has a lot of diehard fans that will support their artists regardless of how many hits or "club bangers" they have.
