A judge ruled rap mogul Clifford “T.I.” Harris, Jr. will be held liable for a lion’s share of the damages awarded in a copyright lawsuit filed by Marvin Gaye‘s family.

In March, a jury awarded Gaye’s family $7.4 million in their copyright infringement lawsuit against songwriters Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke for their hit song, “Blurred Lines”.

Gaye’s estate accused the songwriters of sampling Gaye’s hit song “Got to Give it Up” without permission.

In an unusual deposition, Thicke denied writing “Blurred Lines” even though he is credited as a songwriter along with Williams.

T.I., who raps on the song, asked a judge not to hold him liable for damages since he is not one of the songwriters.

But, according to the AJC, a judge ruled that “T.I. and record labels including UMG Recordings and Interscope should be held liable for damages.”

The judge also denied Thicke and Williams’ request for a new trial in the case.

The judge reduced the total damages to $5.3 million and ordered “T.I. and the record labels” to pay their share of $3.2 million in damages.

In happier news, T.I. and his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Harris, celebrated her 40th birthday last night.

T.I.’s movie ‘Ant-Man’ is set to open in theaters this weekend.

Marvin left them nothing.

I ain't got no sides in this... I just feel where they coming from.

Wasn't T.I only featured on the song though? Why he paying that much out?
