I think the the secondary skepticism was whether or not it made sense to offer frontline titles day and date with titles on a subscription service. I don't think that ever made sense, I still don't think it makes sense.

"I believe it's not becoming obvious that it's just a lost opportunity for the publisher. So I don't want to speak for my friend Phil, but our views remain unchanged.

"There probably is a subscription business [that makes sense], it's a catalog business, it's probably best to aim at very avid consumers because those are the consumers who are interested in playing catalog titles and playing a whole bunch of different titles in a given month.

"But I don't think it's a mass-market service that supplants the interactive entertainment business as we know it at all. I don't think there's any evidence to the contrary at all."

Some folks gotta be dragged kicking and screaming to progress. I don't know why they bother. Whether it's a year from now, or ten, subscription services are the future of the industry and will be a thing. He may as well get on board now.

The issue isn’t subscription services. It’s day 1 big budget shyt. No different than movies.

It’s common sense. Wakanda Forever ain’t droppin day one on D+ for a reason :skip:

God Of War Ragnarok gonna do at least a few million in a week.

GTA prints money at regular retail prices years later.

Yeah, its not really an opinion, its an objective fact the numbers didn’t work for them. If it made financial sense they would do it more.

Maybe it will continue working for indie titles

I feel the same way about movies though. Eventually those big blockbuster movies will make it to streaming platforms, and end up in theaters less. It's just a matter of time.

It makes perfect sense for Xbox who are trying to revive their brand and create an ecosystem. They have the war chest to pay up front for customer confidence.

I agree that it's not sustainable and is confusing in terms of business sense. If a customer can pay the price of 1.5 games to get every AAA release on Day 1, I don't get how that will work out in the long-term. GP is going to have to start charging more if every major Beth/Activision/Blizz game is going to be Day 1 for subscribers

I make enough money that i'm not trying to wait for games to come on gamepass. (only like 3 or 4 new ones a year i usually want to play anyway) i'll never subscribe to a service like that until they start getting exclusives or day 1 releases. just like any other streaming platform. Same way i don't usually wait for movies to hit streaming that i really want to see. I see them in the theater first. The movies i'm not sure about i'l wait until streaming, but even then i don't subscribe to streaming service unless they have originals. i wouldn't be paying for disney + if it was only movies i already saw in theaters or skipped because wasn't interested enough to see in theaters.

When i was a kid and couldn't afford to buy games on the regular and was basically just stuck with whatever came with the console gamepass would've be a great deal for me though.

This isn't really saying something that most business types have been saying for a while. Gamepass is a great tool for exposure, but for a lot of the biggest titles, that doesn't really make the most financial sense. I think the opinion of it is skewed by Microsoft being willing to put their first party games on there day and date, but most publishers aren't in the situation the XBox division is in, where they're a part of a much, much larger company that can afford to play the long game of losing up front revenue to drive subscriptions.

That said, I'm not sure how sustainable the current model is, considering what they're spending on new studios. I can definitely see a future where the Gamepass tiers get realigned so some of the current features of Ultimate become the base tier, and some or all of the first party exclusives get included in a new higher cost tier.

once they figure out the piracy problem it will happen but the theaters will fight against it
don't be surprised if you're paying 30-45 for the choice though
