I have called for a withdrawal from Afghanistan but a hasty one is the wrong idea. It has to be gradual. If we withdraw we should have an agreement with Kabul that if it looks like Taliban is about to take over vast amounts of territory we go right back in to halt the Taliban’s march. Basically prevent the Taliban from ever taking complete power in Afghanistan.

I agree, hence why I felt the big question mark is what happens post-interim govt

The Taliban are not going to be content with being handed a couple of ministries and maybe a handful of provinces to run...theyre not ideologically able to accept that...but the Afghan govt can simply offer a seat at the already large table

Taliban looking at em like "YOU sitting at OUR table"

The Afghan gov. is South Vietnam status right now. "Your days are numbered in low digit":pachaha:

LOL. Why? It's a waste of time and American lives. The Taliban are going to take the country. If you want to stop them, just colonize the country.

great news, unfortunately this is the easy part

the challenge is the future make up of Afghanistan and its govt
Do you think it would be possible for a government to get buy in from enough of the people in "Afghanistan" to actually work?
It seems Islam is the only thing that could possibly unite the people living within those borders.

to be honest, the "buy in" from the people isnt that important, theyll roll with whoever, the problem is how do you bring together western educated technocrats, islamic insurgents, former islamic insurgents turned warlords, religious preachers and drug trafikkers into a coherent quasi stable and functioning govt?

Barring a complete abandonment by India, Iran, Russia etc, the non Pashtuns in the north and west of the country will stubbornly resist the Taliban

It's not even a guarantee the Taliban can take Kabul

The takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban is NOT an inevitable conclusion
