I’m Pan-African and put the Black race before everything but that doesn’t mean that I have to pretend like all the cultures that African people have created don ‘t exist. A Black Puerto Rican and an African American may both be Black or better yet African but their cultures are different because of their ecology. Recognizing cultural differences is not division and it is the only way pan-africanism is gonna work. We must unite as African people but we have to respect that some of those Africans are gonna speak Spanish, go to a catholic church, and listen to Bachata while other Africans are gonna speak English, go to a protestant church, and listen to Jazz...this is our reality. We need to find power in those cultural expressions and understand the commonality in them all. I din’t think it’s fair to call a Black Dominican an African American...it totally erases their expression of African culture e.g. their food, language, and music and it would be the same to call an AA a Dominican. But to reiterate, the thing that needs to bind us is the fact that we are Black and that should supercede everything else. But that doesn’t mean that I have to pretend as if jerk chicken and reggae don’t exist just so that I don’t have to acknowledge Jamaican culture.

I have no problem with people recognizing what makes their culture/heritage distinct and for looking out for their own interests first. It's logical and everybody has done this in history (sooner or later).

My problem is that people aren't consistent with it. It's not a fully formed or thought out concept in their minds, so when asked/questioned/pressed it unravels. For example the biggest advocate for reparations in the United States the past 30 years has been Louis Farakhan, born in US of West Indian parents. Malcolm X was half AA/hlaf West Indian. These aren't opinions but facts, so when people are copping pleas/juelzing about facts....it's clear that they haven't fully thought out their views.

I bring up Farakhan in every thread broaching this topic and people sidestep it like a landmine.
