A Twitter thread posted last Friday alleged pupils had been shown cartoons of the prophet.

However, another parent of one of the teacher's pupils said Mr Paty asked Muslim students to raise their hands and to leave the classroom before they were taught about the image.

She said: "My son understood right away - the evening he came home, he understood right away that it was not to discriminate.

I think the fact that he teaches a critical thinking class makes all the difference. He didn’t just pull it out to offend people, he’s showing his students an offensive cartoon as part of the lesson. He asked the kids of that faith to leave because he knows it’s offensive to them but he wants to continue his lesson

Why did he think sending some kids out would somehow negate the insult? Irrespective of whether he called a student a "whatever" to his face or behind his back to other students and insult would exist.
Doing so outside of the sight of the offended does not in and of itself confer some magic property of rendering it non-insulting.
Doing so wilfully when you know that some would be insulted is a compounding factor.
His position as a (critical thinking class) teacher means that he has less latitude than the average citizen in terms of his interactions with students - not more.
