I would say come to work for the railroad and stack some money until things improve but with the way your President is doing things trains are getting shorter, trains are getting cut, new guys are being bumped around from terminal to terminal like pinballs, etc. etc. it's not going great out here either, though thankfully no furloughs as of yet. We've been shuttling around grain hoppers (though they can actually hold a few different bulk agriculture products) to prepare for the various harvests and that should keep us busy going into the holiday season. However, the way people are struggling I honestly expect a huge shock when it comes to consumer spending; I don't think people are going to dig deep into consumerism this year unless we get an economy wide version of a Steam Sale.
I'm no expert on any of these things; just a nikka on a train lol, but I do have a bit of insight as even rank and file employees like myself have considerable access to train movements, freight shipments, certain traffic trends etc etc. The most worrying thing I see are the short intermodal/container trains. The management doesn't seem too worried because Union Pacific isn't all in on intermodal, we'll always find some junk to move around the country, but it doesn't bode well for the general economy as a whole.
Lastly, as a union employee, fukkING UNIONIZE. Unions are not perfect and we are weaker than we once were but there are so many ways to get extra money via claims that I stupidly leave money on the table because I'm so overwhelmed by the extras. There was a time we could get an extra $100 for lacing up ONE air hose, a task that literally takes seconds. If you had to lace five air hoses you got $500 in claims. If you had to take ice to your locomotive (in a plastic bag) you got a full day's pay. Getting rid of carmen who did those jobs also made those claims go away (in certain terminals) but there are still ways to make money that will have you

My point is UNIONIZE, even if the job pays well like tech. I am finally a six figure Coli nikka (now that it doesn't mean that much

) but having a union allows for so much more. Tech bros, if/when the good times roll back in, do not allow them to exploit you for a few months for an admittedly great salary, a nap room and some catered lunch. UNIONIZE and get it all written into a contract and make a career out of it.
I know it's easier said than done but if the average American citizen went union they would not want to go back. And I mean strong unions, or at least unions with a history of strength like the rail unions where you can see the benefits even in their weakened states. Most law enforcement are MAGA. MAGA is anti union. Do you think those guys would ever, EVER, get rid of their union?
Anyway, enough rambling from me. Hang in there brehs.
