TIL: Stackoverflow's website traffic has died to less than half since ChatGPT came out - the transition to future has just started.

I still need a co-founder. I was going to try and apply for Y Combinator. They rarely fukk with solo founders.

I mean this is to be expected. AI had a huge pr. But the one thing they didn’t elaborate on was that AI ain’t some self thinking mechanism. These people have money. And they used it to hire folks from 3rd world countries to do a lot of the work, like manually identifying objects in pictures and feeding the analyzed data to their algorithms.

AI in its current is essentially the ability to sift through extremely large volumes of data very fast and then presenting the user with the answers in mere seconds.

The public is thinking this is some magical intelligent being that has been created. You gotta give white people their credit here. They are extremely gifted in the art of portrayal. Take a good piece of sh1t. Slap a name on it. Voila! You got a phenomenon.

What “AI” is doing right now is equivalent to what google did when they first came out. Their search algorithms dwarfed yahoos and other search engines.

I'm building an encrypted email client. I don't think that's a good fit.

As the stuff I work on gets more complex and nuanced I find AI tools become less accurate and useful. Sometimes it will confidently be wrong, I’ll correct it, and it’ll be like “You right, my bad”

:pachaha:

At this point it’s basically just a jacked up Google.

I got laid off in April 2024. I was unemployed until July 2025, I am on the 2nd week of my new job. That is paying me 40% less than my last job. :mjcry:

The only benefit is it is work from home so I can still do my podcast editing for Youtube and get a few extra hundreds from that.

If I was you I wouldn't leave Chit. I feel from grace, from six figures to not even mentioned at all :mjcry:

Gameplan now is to humble myself and use this job to get into security or another IT field.
What u do in IT? When u say security you’re talking about cyber security?

This is what I’ve been telling people.

The worst part is that if you don’t have the intuition to stop using it when it starts hallucinating then it can suck up your time.

I’ve used it significantly less then I did in 2023.

And I’ll say this, if we’re engineers recognizing how faulty the technology is, I’m willing to bet doctors are frustrated as hell.

I guarantee some kid off the street can’t come in and do my job with AI. The technology at least in its current state isn’t even close to that.

I’ll give you an example. Recently I was setting up an operator maintained by a third-party vendor in a K8s environment.

There are multiple ways of installing the operator but the vendor primarily supports and recommends one approach in particular. Due to restrictions in the K8s environment I couldn’t take that approach…the issue was that with the approach I needed to take, a specific feature that I wanted to enable couldn’t be done in a straightforward way.

I queried ChatGPT on how to enable this feature with the route I took and it flat out made up answers on how to enable that feature. It got to the point where I basically was pressing the machine on where it found that answer (lol) and it fessed up that there was no official documentation on what it was suggesting and the answer it gave me was from reverse engineering the recommended approach for installation.

So I went ahead and looked at the source code of what it was reverse engineering and guess what…there was zero evidence of the solution ChatGPT was trying to suggest. In fact, once I looked at the source code I figured out on my own what I needed to do in order for my approach to work. After a little bit more prodding on ChatGPT it eventually course corrected and gave me a viable solution(which I still had to tweak on my own).

All that is to say that these tools can be useful but they can start spewing garbage when you’re coloring outside the lines or taking an unconventional approach, which is a common occurrence in this industry. If you don’t have the knowledge or expertise to actually know if the solutions you’re getting are legitimate you might hang yourself relying too heavily on them.
