Elon Musk's xAI put a college student in charge of the team training Grok amid sweeping layoffs

The data annotation team is made up of contract and full-time staff tasked with labeling, categorizing, and contextualizing raw data to teach Grok how to better understand the world. Prior to last week's layoffs, it had a headcount of around 1,500. That number is now around 900.

After Pasini took over at xAI, two employees spoke critically about him on Slack. One of the workers questioned how he moved into the role given his credentials, according to a screenshot viewed by Business Insider.

Both workers had their accounts deactivated within hours of posting, screenshots show.

I got a friend who works abroad as an engineer in the same petro company I’m at… he hates it there/is home sick and so a couple years back he started on an associates degree in data analytics with the plan to get a remote job in that field and “eat” off that + his rental properties til the sun sets. He completed the degree but tells me he gets no call backs in job applications. Mind you he in his mid-40s with zero experience in DA, but he thinks it’s because he’s abroad and thinks if he quits and moves back to the states he’ll be picked up; feeling somewhat discouraged, he’s now working on an AWS cert in one of those fancy programs with a mentor or something

I be telling him :whoa:

I’m half-tempted to send him a link to this thread :mjlol:
DA field saturated. I got laid off from a remote DA job 100k+ only joints hiring was entry level. I snagged one with a pay cut of course, I have 5 years of exp

A ‘demoralizing' trend has computer science grads out of work — even minimum wage jobs. Are 6-figure tech careers over?

Zach Taylor told The New York Times that, since graduating in 2023 with a computer science degree from Oregon State University, he’s applied to nearly 6,000 tech jobs — and it’s been one of “the most demoralizing experiences I have ever had to go through.”

He only landed 13 interviews and no job offers, yet couldn’t get a job at McDonald’s because of “lack of experience.”

got a raise in my trade i work in

get in trade school
hvac

prolly getting another raise in a few months too :ahh:
I work IT and got some trade experience. The pay can be really good.

But I think one of the big downsides for me is higher risk of injury and it taking a toll on your body as you age depending on what trade you work in climbing, lifting, digging, carrying, pulling, hanging, and hauling material around takes a toll on your body. Get old and all that money you made going to medical bills.

I remember working a construction job one of my coworkers was in a rush because the boss was putting pressure on him to work faster mfer end up falling off a ladder while trying to haul up roofing tiles.
