this is NOT a time for blue collar and tradesman to act smug

tech evolves in ALL facets of society. What happens when a robot starts welding and fixing toilets?
I don't know if I'm down with just letting a robot come into my house and fix my toilets or remodel my bathroom. :patrice:

Who's acting smug? I'm just telling the truth. It wasn't in this thread, but when I explained to brehs that the job market is not bad right now for blue collar brehs right now I was basically told to stop lying even though every blue collar breh has echoed exactly what I said.

I say it's about damn time because for DECADES our career fields have been purposefully devalued and they have purposefully done everything they can to keep our wages low and quite frankly they can't do that anymore now that the majority of immigrants coming over here now are taking over tech and white collar industries and not blue collar ones. We finally are starting to actually get paid what we should have been getting paid 10, hell even 20 years ago.

I feel for our white collar brehs and tech brehs, I really do. These companies are doing exactly the same thing they did to us to y'all with the H1-B program. Purposefully over saturating y'alls job market to suppress y'alls wages and keep from having to pay you all what you are worth. I hope our white collar/tech/corporate brehs find a way to fight back and stop it, but it took over 20 years before blue collar brehs finally got some relief so I do know even if they find a way the process will not be easy and it won't happen overnight. Trump putting the $100k fee on H1-B applicants is actually a good thing and I'm glad someone is finally doing something to stop all this nonsense that has been going on with them just letting anyone in to work for cheap and they end up doing a shytty ass job.

I'll never forget when I first got into the trade my uncle(who is also an electrician) asked how much journeyman get paid now and when I told him he said damn that's what we were getting paid in the 90's... this was 2013 when he asked me this btw. It was ROUGH for blue collar brehs for years out here and we finally got some relief.

North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
If you're established in you're career, you're fine. There will always be a demand. Future students in tech will have to move smarter to get ahead in this field.

It's not ALL doom and gloom.
Just need to be creative. Everyone coming into the industry wants to be a 6 figure worker bee/drone. No creativity and no imagination.

Anyone going to AfroTech this year?
I've heard mixed reviews on it over the years but I figured in this current economy it may be popping attendance and networking wise

I heard it's just a giant turn up event and that last years was terrible. Also the pricing is insane.

I may consider going because I've never been yet and just wanted to check it out.

same I heard. Wasn't sure if it was because it's a black tech event and folks are hating or if it's really just a glorified trap brunch full of stem degrees now

The prices aren't worth it to me. Doesn't seem like a good value.

Resume.org: Turmoil ahead for US job market as genAI disruption kicks up waves

Half of US firms have put a freeze on hiring, and a third are eyeing layoffs; high earners without AI skills are most at risk as the fast pace of change reshapes the hiring landscape.

With four-in-10 companies saying they expect to replace workers with AI tools by 2026, the report suggests a major shift is underway — though, given Resume.org’s position in the job search market, the data could reflect a mix of real trends and strategic framing.

The tech job market is feeling the shake-up, according to Kara Dennison, head of Career Advising at Resume.org. Pandemic over-hiring, AI disruption, and shifting consumer needs are forcing companies to recalibrate. “We’ve seen big waves of layoffs, mostly because companies over hired during the pandemic and are now adjusting to rapid changes driven by AI and shifting consumer needs,” Dennison said.

Facts. There's a ton of demand out there right now for ML/AI related skills. It's not just PhD AI Researcher or bust
