They felt incredibly threatened by it because he voluntarily signed up for a 2nd tour even after doing his duty, and it ended up being on the swiftboats where he saw all sorts of hairy action and pulled a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and a purple heart.
They found some veterans willing to be used as tools (guys who served on swiftboats but not a single guy who had actually served alongside Kerry) and created a narrative that Kerry wasn't all that and his medal-winning actions were exaggerated. Made up an action committee supposedly unconnected to the Bush campaign called, "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" that was about as closely related to the truth as the 9/11 Truthers were.
Just straight lied about a vet's service, while at the same time Cheney, Bush, Rove, Limbaugh, and the rest of them pushing it had dodged the war completely. Despicable.
They went after Gore's service too because he didn't actually see action (worked as a military from journalist from Vietnam) but sometimes talked like he did. While Bush was out there talking like a vet when he didn't even leave Texas.
