It was all good just a week ago for the Riverside, Calif., teenager behind the camera of the biggest meme of 2016.
ABC7 reports that the teenager who filmed the "Damn Daniel" video, Joshua Holz, fell victim to the Internet prank known as swatting last night. For those unfamiliar with the term, swatting is the act of reporting a fake crime or emergency with the intentions of sending SWAT teams to a victim's residence.
In this case, police received a call around 1 a.m. PST last night claiming someone at Holz's house had opened fire with an AK-47, purportedly shooting their own mother. As you can probably guess, none of this actually happened, but the cops showed up anyway.
"We believe and the family believes that since their video went viral, it's somehow connected. Ever since their video has gone out there, they've received a number of what they call strange phone calls and emails, and a lot of strange things happening so tonight was just another incident for their family," a police lieutenant said.
Unfortunately for the person who made the call, swatting can carry some pretty hefty penalties. Last October, a Connecticut man was sentenced to a year in prison for his role in similar incidents. As of publishing, there are no suspects in the "Damn Daniel" case.
