And they substitute consumerism and political ideology instead. What's worse?
At least with religion there is a foundation for ethics and morality.
One conversation with either hardline atheist progressives or atheist libertarians, and you will realize that the future isn't so bright.
I know an atheist that uses accupuncture, Chinese herbs, and other alternative medicines knowing full well that there is no scientific support. This type of person worse than a theist because the theist will follow the learned logic of the religion and hopefully apply it consistently.
I am an atheist btw
You don't sound like an atheist. Just an observation, not an accusation.
That foundation of ethics and morality (let's use Christianity as an example), while noble in concept and often in practice includes the extreme lambasting of gay people, the advocation of slavery, the supposed existence of serpents capable of conversing in fluent English, resurrection of the dead, centuries-old shipbuilders, repeated instances of incest by divine order, and an mandate to turn over 10% of your income to prove your love for the 'Lord Almighty'.
I find it supremely difficult to agree with these tenets.
The continued shaming of sexual victims and dogged defense of the perpetrators, along with the systematic abuse of young boys in the Vatican, simply further cements my shunning of Christianity and furthermore all religions.
A supreme being who communicates only through one-way prayer, despite being omnipotent, one who watches over you every second of every day, gives ten commandments which you CANNOT break on pain of being hellbound, and then claims that you possess free will and that he loves you, seems plainly.. obsessively psychopathic.
Not all atheists are smart - I have seen many an atheist speak nothing but drivel and commit simply retarded acts. It is often the atheists of lesser intellect that speak the loudest, much like the Christians of lesser intellect feel the absolute need to spout their beliefs upon everyone who will and will not listen. But by not believing in supposedly omnipotent higher beings, that dumb atheist's grasp on reality is already higher than that (edit>)
of the loud religious individual.
I have always maintained, however, that you are at complete liberty to place your faith in whatever you wish - Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, etc, etc.. even if doing so
directly contradicts proven facts, logic and reason.
Remember which side you're on.
