Saw this somewhere else. If the bear spray didn't work she should have just found shelter and just forget about the kayak. That black bear's mother could have been around.
Also if she knew she was gonna be in bear country she should have brought an air horn (loud noises would have scared the bear away) or a gun if she felt her life was in danger even if hibernating season is near by.
