I work in manufacturing in a southern city that is far less “progressive” in reputation than anywhere in silicon valley and that type of shyt would NEVER fly at my workplace.
I am in a degreed/professional position at my workplace, but I interact with the mostly blue collar working class workforce on the production floor at times. Some are redneck types from rural small towns in Florida. Some of them are probably racists privately I’m sure, but I have never heard anything near the extent of the open racism described in that lawsuit at my workplace, and I talk to mostly all the Black people too.
Even if there’s a person there who wants to call people racist names, it would never happened because they know they would be in HR and fired the next day. There was one old white redneck who once said to a Black female co-worker “How do y’all make it jiggle like that” and his ass got clapped up the next day. Took his badge and security escorted him out.
For people to feel that comfortable with all the open n-word and plantation talk, there is something deeply rotten in that culture and in the heart of the CEO.
The racial slurs included racial slurs in Spanish and this is California.
It's hard for a few lone black people to operate in manufacturing with larger groups of competing cultures. People naturally clique up and sadly folks clique up to compete for the bosses attentions and the prosperity of their own kind.
They think if the blacks do good then I'm gonna get fired. Unfortunately it's often a lot more petty then that. It could be 3 black people in an assembly line of 10 white / Spanish or Asians and they will feel a type of way and talk shyt. Don't matter how polite you try to be.
This is where management is supposed to step in to set the tone of interaction among employees but clearly Tesla management are racist pigs which enables staff to be the same. They're supposed to fire the ringleaders of the racists so staff can be the team their designed to be. A fish stinks at the head so whatever bullshyt that is happening at Tesla is a top down problem
