Great post, thanks. I didn't realize Musk was so full of shyt. I just got a 2200 sq ft roof done for under 7k. That price was through a good friend but he said it would be about $12-13k if I went through a legit contractor. These Tesla numbers are outrageous. Pretty disappointed to hear the truth.
i didn't expect it to be under $40k. my roof is less than 5 years old so i wasn't going to be in the market for one right now anyway. even if he is full of shyt on the price i like where he's at. hopefully in 10 years the cost will be reasonable and a majority of my roof can have solar shingles and generating energy to where i can have multiple powerwalls in the garage. in 10 years i should be in jamaica anyway and living completely off the grid.

The government should subsidize this to bring the cost down.

I'm sure it some 'the money you will save on energy in the long run' math.

Yeah like regular solar panels, I guess. Doesn't it take like a decade to have a complete ROI with them though? And by then they'll be due to replaced? :blackplatomayne:

If it works tho :manny:

solar sales rep here,

roi = 8-10
replacement = 25-30

I'm in az. Varies from state to state. We do our sizing based on the amount of electricity you use and not the roof size.

Roughly works out to costing 80% of your monthly electric bill if you finance the system over 15 years. This includes installation, warranties, guarantees, permits, inspections and every thing else

Save more bread if you finance yourself or pay cash.

EDIT: Maintenance, monitoring and warranties covered for full 25 years

80% isn't a bad deal at all. 15 years of payments then 10 years of free and maintained power :banderas:
is backfeed common in your state breh?

Yizzir, sell electicity to power company during the day, use electricity from power company at night, power company cut you a (small) check for the extra leftover in the fall.

If this creates more interest then it's worth it. Same with any of his other schemes. It's all about nurturing the potential and making people believe it is possible. Just like everything else, the price will eventually go down but how many of you people in this thread would even be considering solar panels if this story didn't hit the news?

I like Elon Musk, a lot.
The spin he's putting on pricing is a little ridiculous though.
That being said, I am excited for his future endeavors, and someone needs to break into the solar panel market on a national scale.
If I get the time, I want to do a little science fair project and see if I can build some solar cells myself.

people still dont get musk. for the most part he's not trying to fleece the govvy for money with ducktales. What he's actually doing is jumping into areas where he looks at it and says to self "there has to be better way to do that." when he finds a way he tells the world about it and/or produces it himself and puts a working model out their. This is so that others can jump in and bring that price down. Anyone that's FIRST to any new idea or new twist will always be the higher priced version.
