The numbers have to do with shading and tone.



Number 1 pencils are darker than 2 and the higher up you go, the lighter the pencils get.

The other pencils are more common in art classes. ( for drawing, not scantrons)

The number of the pencil refers to the hardness of the graphite (it's not lead in pencils)

The vast majority of pencils sold are #2. But artists will purchase pencils of different graphite hardness
