I ain't gonna lie, that post Walt made in the thread . I couldn't help but think shyt was extra over the top. Off that alone, it deserved a dap lol.
I think it's easy not to get into Lupe mainly cuz there isn't much of a personal side on some pulling on heartstrings ish. If people try to use Lupe as a reason they feel smarter for listening to him, then it's kinda loserish lol. Not in the I didn't know about that sense, but in the I'm listening to Lupe cuz I'm smarter sense.
One thing about Lupe is he doesn't exactly go about trying to get you to connect with him as a person especially in a direct way, which is what I expect from rappers for the most part. It makes it hard to connect with or feel what's being said. Even if I feel like I'm reaching for a possible way to read something, it doesn't make me think of a song as any better really whether it's the hook of Adoration of the Maji or the themes prevalent in the songs between the fall and winter interludes. Can't be too mad at people admiring something they consider to be ambitious.

I feel like you can't have it both ways, you can't herald something genius lyricism and not corny at all but then be put out when it's broken down. Many people's perspectives is it's going over people's heads, it never went over my head, my point is it isn't dope to me. If people are going to nitpick it to praise it should be allowed to nitpick it to critique it, also it's not 1 example, it's littered throughout the album, on songs some are calling the best lyrical displays of all time.
It's also not just not potent, it's really awful, rain like a slight chance of rain when it's raining? Really? Lmao.

This is what I been sayin whole time....
Even if we scavenge for every little moment & line we thought was corny or didn't like the impressive lyricism would still outweigh the bad. By a lot.

I don't think anyone sees that as anything crazy nor do I think Lupe would insist it is. It's almost like exercising all of the shyt he could reference for the I prefer girls to rain/reign all over the world. It's funny cuz after that treating every one of your words like reinforcements when recording and that bit before it is almost essentially like reinforcing the first line almost to a fault lol and then he says that's what was important when he was poor, but he's passed that. Basically what he did when he was younger was all about showing he could make those type of references in rhyme, but he's more abstract now. So when he says he's more than, it could be a reference to being linear then (and that section being very linear aside from the rest of the song) and having less money then.
I'm gonna be real you pointing that part out just made me think about it like that. So thanks.
.Being abstract doesn't essentially mean he's gonna rhyme crazy or not be playful with this flow. That's probably most evident in something like Adoration of the Magi, more so in the first 2 verses than anything.
In your opinion, personally I don't agree, that's where the difference of opinion stems from. Surely at least people could understand where people are coming from in terms of their views about not liking it. And the disillusion with our perception of it being over-hyped with lines like that. But it's all good, can accept difference of opinion,, just a lot of the bars when broken down aren't stacking up to me as dope, I felt this at the time and it was very off putting to me cause I like lyrics. I really like the production, but some of the lyrics and inflections I couldn't get with personally.

It goes from he's being too cryptic and complex to he's spitting wack bars...lol...man..nikkas really have a problem wit this nikka...and if I break down and dissect every single bar ANY rapper spits there's gonna be duds...even my favorite rappers...
I always said he was spitting wack bars on this album, lots of them. Being unnecessarily complex or cryptic if it ain't effective is wack bars.

It's not just 1 bar, like I said it's littered throughout the album.
It's no problem with Lupe with me, I like some of his work.
But it's not just 1 or 2 duds, it's a lot. That's 1 of the issues, and it's also symptomatic and indicative of the flaws on the album. You compound that with the fact people have literally said it's Shakespeare work on the album it's going to get critiqued. There's masses of sub par bars on an album that is proclaimed as a lyrical masterpiece, 1 of the GOAT albums if not the best and also 1 of the best lyrical displays.
My point is if you actually break a lot of it down it doesn't stand up to the praise, infact some of it should get a lot more criticism, some of he bars are embarrassingly bad.
