I understand where she's coming from. Pharrell wasn't just some producer. He was 1/2 of one of the most successful production duos/teams EVER. He, himself was a solo artist. He was respected in fashion, he scored the Oscar's, and he was a label head. And when you see someone like Pharrell, you see clout. This wasn't 90's Pharrell signing the Clipse and Kelis where he was just getting his feet wet. This was, "My records account for 40% of the records played on the radio", scored Despicable Me, BBC, skateboard P, I have worked with and have hits with all your favorite artists Pharrell.

Pharrell is one of those people in powerful positions that don't really assert the power because they don't really like conflict.

I'm moreso saying that isn't somehow him wronging her because she had wrong impressions. it's not something he did

her understanding isn't his responsibility. that's why minors are supposed to sign contracts with guidance and oversight from parental figures. the whole issue here is Pharrell ISN'T her daddy. that's on her and her family
What parental figure is going to be with 100% of the time, navigating in an exclusive industry? Everyone simply assumes the person that gave you their confidence that they'd look out for your child, will do just that. And any child, or young person, is going to assume that their "mentor" is going to do just that. Even if they can't protect them fully, they'd inform them.

A lot of artists fall into this trap of thinking these label heads care about you personally. They don’t and really its not their jobs to do so. Thats not even really what Management is for, its why these children are supposed to have a PARENT AND/OR GUARDIAN PRESENT AT ALL TIMES to make sure they are properly cared for and that what was promised is delivered upon.

She was only 15 at the time but looking back I still don’t see how anybody would feel its the label owners job to protect you. Pharrell was writing and producing for a gazillion artists at the time, not to mention his OWN career which was pretty hot. There’s no way he was going to have the bandwidth to look after a kid that wasn’t his.

If there’s any blame to go towards a child that wasn’t protected it should go towards the parents.

You think Barry Gordy was “Protecting” The Jackson 5 just because he signed them and mentored them early on? Absolutely NOT. That was Joseph’s, you know their FATHER’s job. And by all accounts he did it well (if sternly) as none of the Jacksons were on drugs, had their money stolen, fathered any illegitimate kids, broke any laws, or caused any scandals while JOSEPH was in charge. He protected them because as a father thats what his JOB was. As their manager he also negotiated favorable terms with Motown and when it was time to bounce from Barry and Co he negotiated favorable terms with CBS. Matter of fact, none of them brothers really had any financial/career issues UNTIL they fired Joseph as they’re manager. Jermaine stayed behind at Motown and released flop after flop after flop.

So she expected Pharrell to be her dad?

Pharrell literally is producing music for other people, music for himself, music for NERD, clothes, sneakers, a hotel, being a husband, holding down his own family AND she wants him to do the type of shyt that her parents/manager is supposed to be doing.

Listen, if I’m signed to Pharrell that’s a door that’s already open. Give me 3-5 fire Neptune tracks, adlibs, a hook and do some video drops for me and I’ll handle the rest. fukk expecting the dude who signed you to give you the red carpet treatment unless you are an elite talent.

Scrounge for your own tracks, find producers and hire someone to be your creative director and shape your brand and not rely on CACs at the label to cook up weak ideas then charge you for it.

Take half the advance $ so you can eat and tell the label they can keep their $ or throw that into your promo so you don’t own them as much when it’s time to recoup. Book some little shows and under the table cash club appearances.

Make sure you got 5 solid songs mixed and mastered for an EP and then get on some damn features because in the event one of them shyts blow, you can ride the promo off of someone else’s dime
