Thanos had killed off half the universe, including gods and celestial beings. He killed Galactus, Order and Chaos, Eternity, Infinity, etc..... He then *BECAME* the living embodiment of the universe. Let that marinate for a sec.

The only reason he lost is because his corporeal form was still wearing the gauntlet, and he never bothered with it once he shed his physical body.
