The village mayor is the most talented orator* in the field and he's been courting big donors since he announced his bid. He's running on the Democratic platform so it's not like he's going to step on anyone's monied interests. Unlike O'Rourke, he was smart and did a bunch of media appearances to increase his name recognition. Based on those three things he's pretty much tailor-made to fundraise well.

He has an abysmal track record with the black community (show me a Dem nominee who won it without black support), he doesn't have Obama Immunity (sole reason Diamond Joe exists), and he doesn't have a signature policy initiative (he cares more about "values" than policy). Based on these three things I don't think he's going to get within striking distance of the nomination as the field starts to narrow.

Anyway, fundraising without improved polling just means he gets to hang around and build his name. Given that he's only 37 that's the smart play.
