It's not hard to do but you're a major target with a USA passport. A guy at my job went with his Romanian passport, took loads of pictures many illegal. But he was able to scot by.

I traveled to Vladivostok about a decade ago via bus in Hunchun, which borders North Korea. There were a few North Koreans on the bus and I was mean mugged the whole time.



I would never visit that fukking country.
