I understand being hurt that the dead beat father just decide to return while you've been there for them and them obviously pushing your feelings aside. You need to establish early on that you aren't just an atm.
Give people stuff out of love not because you want them to 'respect' you, it will not work and you being there for the daughter/mother for years won't be appreciated. Not saying he 'deserved' this but hopefully he learned from this experience.
