there were all sorts of shyt goin on, there is no way he shouldve stayed away that long. that aint oversaturation. I was around the music industry at that time cuz I was shopping to a couple of labels. I had info from reliable sources that Eric B was straight strongarming nikkas and him and Ra had beef. nikkas said Ra was goin to studios to record and Eric B had booked up time or he was threatenin nikkas. There is a reason the dude took 5 years to release an album whether that was true or false.regardless, lyricists like KRS and G Rap were still grindin while people were wondering if Ra was even alive. then new lyricists like Nas, AZ, Black Thought, who were changing the game. you had other artists like Snoop, Outkast, Redman, Organized Konfusion, etc...the game had branched out on so many different levels. Ra sounded mortal for the first time in his career, even though it was a triumphant return.

That's the only thing really that hurts Ra in the debate, the long absences.
Rakim is ahead of 99 percent of MC's of all time right now, only a few are on his elite level.
There's no way Eminem is rhymin better than Rakim now.
And as much as I respect him, I think Rakim is rhymin better than G Rap right now, Nas is rhymin elite no doubt. And Pac unfortunately dead and no posthumous abums been released for a while.
I don't think people fully understand what an AMAZING lyricist Rakim is and was. They call him God MC for a reason...
The hooks grew on me, the whole album did. I think it was just different from what people were expecting, yet dope nevertheless.
Nas is a great lyricist and even better artist but I don't think he's quite Rakim lyrically.
Rakim is intricate as hell, lyrical genius.
