They greatly overachieved last year and are playing up to their normal level this year. They also made the mistake the 07 mets did and didn't improve in the off season.

Matt Carpenter leads NL 2nd basemen in hits, doubles, average, OBP, SLG, OPS and WAR. And he's 2nd in RBI and walks. More than capable defensively.

He's definitely the best offensive 2B this year. The Pirates are collapsing though.
