I don't know what the Astros were supposed to do here and why everyone is so upset
The MLB doesn't have a combine set up where players get physicals and MRIs...Aiken was considered the top arm...the Astros were willing to give him 6.5 million pending the physical...they found he had a degenerative condition in his UCL that scared them off the 6.5
The Nix situation sucks for Nix...but from everything I've read the Nix deal hinged on Aiken signing below slot...that was apparently told to him according to what I've read...if that's the case then Nix has no case because Aiken not only didn't sign below slot value he didn't sign at all which means they have no money to play with under the cap. If both parties verbally agree to something contingent on something else happening and that something else doesn't happen (ie Aiken signing under slot) then that agreement is null and void. That's basic first year law stuff. So, I doubt he can win his grievance unless there are different facts from the ones available to the public.
It comes down to this...the Astros made a last second push to 5 million because they believed that would allow them to still get Nix and maybe even Mac Marshall. Aiken turned down the 5 million. Therefore the Astros will get the second pick in next year's draft guaranteed plus their own top 5 pick from their results this year.
In short their thought process was Aiken, Nix, Marshall > two top five picks in 2015 > Aiken and Marshall
It's a completely ridiculous situation. It sucks for every one involved. But asking the Astros to pay full price for damaged goods is ridiculous.

he has been a fukking horrible commissioner
I think baseball needs a new commissioner to brand the game better. But he has been a good commissioner in a lot of ways. He's made 8.5 billion dollars for the sport at a time when people think its "dying", he brought a sport competitive balance and parity to a sport without a salary cap, he enabled MLB AM which is the best digital apparatus in all of sports and got all thirty teams to split the money, and there's been longer labor peace then in all the other sports. I can't blame him for the PED's because dudes were doing it on the low and he didn't have the power to come down on it on his own because baseball's union is crazy powerful.
