can it be argued that what's happening with no major players being signed is essentially collusion by the owners...so that they can completely control the market value??

or is it the players/agents' fault for trying to continue getting those wild deals?

i know the current free agents aren't harper, trout, machado-level...but still.

The teams with money are near the luxury tax

If the Giants payroll wasn’t fuked up they would easily give jd martinez 150-200 mil

It’s on the players simply because they expected more than what’s being offered. Agents like Boras don’t have teams like LA and The Yankees to rely on for leverage and it hurts his guys. Then you have teams that suck that otherwise aren’t using free agency to try to improve. Those teams should be ripped by their fans but they probably feel like there’s no combo of free agents to get them to contend.

It’s hard to cry collusion when Boston is willing to give JD Martinez 5 years $100 mil and Boras thinks he’s worth twice as much.

The fact that teams are tanking is a problem though. That hurts pennant races. Last year the races were trash. 162 games and you’re trying to lose most of them is rough.

The cubs are 35 million below the luxury tax. They have made offers to darvish, arrieta and cobb. They want more, theo isn't budging.

The cubs have the most money to spend over anybody right now and can outbid any teams left but they aren't gonna outbid themselves.

These fa's are being greedy that 6 year 180 mil offer isn't coming no matter how long they wait.

next winter no one will be talking about collusion when harper, kershaw and machado get 250-350 million contracts

I hate siding with Billionaires over Millionaires but in this case, I think I am. Moreso, I just don't like the precedence that if one person gets a record breaking deal, the next Free Agent up thinks they deserve the same money. Combined with all the long term deals that teams have signed Free Agent deals, really only Max Scherzer has turned out to be worth the money :manny:

JD Martinez is great, but he doesn't deserve to be one of the highest paid every day players. Darvish and Arrieta are great, but no smart team is putting 200 million into a starting pitcher on the other side of 30. Teams have smartened up. I think the players need to find a better way of getting paid earlier. Arbitration is alright, but I feel like most players don't get paid what they are worth in their prime and when it comes time for them to cash in, they are usually between 28-30 years old where investing 5+ years in them really isn't a smart use of payroll.

I don't know what the fix is but players and agents need to stop trying to be the highest paid player every time they hit free agency. The big deals should be saved for the top of the line players and everyone else in between. Basketball has the same problem where players getting big money just because it's available, not necessarily because they are worth it. Baseball is kind of in that same mode but GM's and Owners seem to be smartening up.

I think the fix will be for the players that aren't in question. The players are going to need to fight so that they don't need six years of service time in the MLB before they can get their first major contract. You already spent enough time in the minors getting crumbs, but then when you get to the MLB you aren't able to earn your maximum earning potential until you're like 28 or older. So it makes it tough to earn that second contract because it's fairly late into the average player's career.

Changing the 6 year rule could potentially screw a couple of teams that nobody want to play for but a lot of those teams aren't doing a good job with that rule in place anyway so they might as well try to get that addressed.

AT&T's the GOAT. Great fans there too.

A cool highlight (at least to me), is the seagulls there. They know when games are gonna end and in the later innings, you'll see them start lining the crown of the stadium. Once the game is over, they swarm the field and stands eating all the leftover food.
