Dudes in here saying they are unfamiliar with Billie Eilish in 2024 confirms how far removed pop music is to the urban market in this 'individual playlist era' compared to the 80's 90's and 2000's. This started in 2017 when the Chainsmokers had the biggest song that year with "Closer" but most people in the urban market were unfamiliar. But in the 80's if U2, Tears For Fears or Bon Jovi had a popular song everyone was familiar. If you go to Youtube "Birds Of A Feather" music video has more views then the "Not Like Us" music video and the Kendrick music video was out longer yet dudes in this thread are saying they are unfamiliar with Billie Eilish's song and the impact it had last year and this year.
Yeah that’s crazy man. Like I know Billie Eilish but I have no idea when she released music. I work with a lot of younger people and they keep me up on the Sabrina Carpenters and Chappell Roan’s of the world. Folk not watching tv and music video shows and stuff anymore kinda changed things. It’s crazy how there’s megastars out here now and there’s a whole section of the country that don’t know who tf these people are lol

It’s never been easier to ignore popular artists

Yep, being a big music person (enjoying the music but also the cultural connection aspect of it), I get sad about how disparate the industry and music is now. Even staying tapped in doesn’t mean you’ll come across others who care about these artists.

The death of VH1, BET, and MTV, MTV2 when it comes to music killed it for people along with the countdown show.

CMT is still doing the format today, which is why country music is in a better standing it's in today.

This.. I remember randomly catching their countdown show when I was staying in a hotel I think maybe in Nashville. I said to myself I wonder why the other networks don’t do countdown shows anymore.. especially now that people don’t watch tv as much. You really have nothing to lose doing that now.
