The 3 albums that put Atlanta Hip Hop on the map all came out in 1992.

I don't know about that one. Kriss Kross was huge, but still not looked at as a kid act much in the way we saw Bow Wow and Romeo. Arrested was huge, but people trashed them. TLC was an R&B group with a rapper.
Wasn't feelin' Kriss Kross or Arrested Development. I preferred Dionne Farris's debut.
I was a kid when all that happened. I only kinda remember all this 'cause my siblings and cousins were the ones listening to those groups and it was TLC and Kriss Kross they was really checkin' for 'cause of their ages. Arrested Development didn't get any spins around here until I got older.
Until Outkast Atlanta wasn't part of the bigger discussion of hip-hop, and I only kinda remember that from the Aquemini era 'cause I was still too young.

Jermaine Dupri, from my POV was the one who put Atlanta on the map. He did write and produce Jump.

But Outkast came out before he really broke out... and my vantage point is late-90s. I was too young and not from Atlanta.
I can see OPs point if I was right in my last post... I think '92 was too early, but somebody had to set things up for Outkast.

:manny::manny::manny:
Between '92 and '94 the only constant for Atlanta was Jermaine Dupri with Kriss Kross and Exscape. If you wanna extend that to '96 for ATLiens... Jermaine Dupri, Outkast... Da Brat?

:patrice::patrice::patrice:
Not to mention, Jermaine Dupri the son of a Columbia records exec... and if we talkin' 'bout labels, LaFace signed TLC and dropped the same year as Kriss Kross... ATL not like NY, so I can't really answer the question 'cause the few artists that came out of ATL before... '02?

. Again, you wouldn't know TLC, Arrested Development, or Kriss Kross was from Atlanta just by listening to their music. You wouldn't learn anything about Atlanta just from listening to them. People didn't care to know those groups were from Atlanta.

1) Straight outta Atlanta. Kris Kross.

2) Where they from? Atlanta.

3) I want to give a shout out to my girl Silk Tymes Leather (Well known Atlanta Group)

Kris Kross repped ATL on their first album on that specific song. It was literally a part of their promo run because the whole 'wearing clothes backwards' thing was considered an Atlanta thing. And it was an actual small wave that I remember my cousin in Texas copying.

This is still subtle though. And its one song with JD saying straight outta Atlanta. Nowhere near as "in your face" as "Myintroletuknow".

LOL. It wasn't just that 1 track. On the last song the guy straight up says that the backwards clothes must be an "Atlanta thing." That's why I said that the backwards thing was considered Atlanta style.

If you were fukking with this album when it dropped (Like I did) you are paying attention to what is said. Like how on the song "The Way Of The Rhyme" dude says the line "Make you say "Dag, uh, that little nikka is so bad" and me being 13 and them being a bubble gum act it instantly had me like :ohhh: "Oooh they said the N word." That specific song was an ABC diss so it was memorable because when you had a tape back then. you listened to it in and out, over under and thru, over and over again. So yeah, hearing Atlanta get repped on that album did exist. Plus when they were doing promo runs, them being from Atlanta was constantly brought up.

You wouldn't have known any of those artists were from Atlanta by listening to the music.
People didn't know Outkast was from Atlanta initially either, for like a year. So the same logic applies. Atlanta didn't really have a hip-hop sound at that point outside of what we thought was booty music, until those groups. But people knew LaFace was based out of Atlanta, so that's how TLC, Toni Braxton, Usher etc...and people knew JD was Atl, especially once Xscape dropped 1 year later. You can kind of credit JD for crafting the Atl hip-hop sound - part new jack, part booty music, part catchiness/sing-songy, part funk. Kriss Kross had 2 albums before Kast even dropped. TLC is also hip-hop, at least for album 1. If that drops today, TBoz is viewed as a rapper. She wasn't a good singer, so she did the hybrid thing.

Kilo put Atlanta on the map. You clearly ain't from here.

Came in to say this.

A-Town Rush put Atlanta on the map…but it also came out in 1992.

I can understand OP saying what he says, but here’s my thing:
Those 3 albums really wasn’t repping Atlanta like that.
I mean, that doesn’t really happen on R&B albums, so you get TLC.
Jermaine admits he dressed the Kris’s in Knicks, Yankees, and Eagles gear because he wanted them to have wide appeal.
If you mention Arrested Development, people think “Tennessee”, not Atlanta.

…so I don’t know if it’s right to say they put Atlanta on The Map if they weren’t (a) letting it be known they were from there, or (b) coming with the sound the place is known for.

Listen to SPCM, look at the videos. There was no way you wouldn't know they weren't from Atlanta. They were shouting at streets and hoods from Atlanta. A lot of the slang you heard from Atlanta from trap to crunk was said in the lyrics. There is a skit on SPCM called "Welcome To Atlanta". They were rocking Braves jerseys in the videos and the album sleeves. Its like saying you didn't know Nas from Queens or Biggie wasn't from Brooklyn.

What Outkast did was establish ATL as legitmate MCs, no gimmicks, no assistance, but that's not what the thread is about.

I think you're trying to apply now to back then. We didn't know much about Atlanta culture then, so them using Atl slang was irrelevant. What we knew about Atl in '93 were the epicenter of the Civil Rights Movement, some of the most prestigious HBCUs, but at that time it was Black Pride style of dress, and booty music. I actually had Southernplayalistic on cassette then & still have on CD. When Playas Ball dropped, We didn't know where they were from for like a year...remember albums didn't drop right away, so all of their shoutouts meant nothing until mid'94. The video looked halfway like West Coast, their accents sounded part Midwest. Plenty of jerseys were worn regardless of where you were from. kriss Kross had on Yankees & A's

TLC we knew through LaFace, and everyone from that umbrella at that time Toni, Usher (back when he was "Babayface's nephew". Kriss Kross we knew through JD, so that became the what we assumed was the Atl sound. When we found out Kast were LaFace, that's pretty much what brought it all together. Kriss Kross has already dropped 2 albums and it was known they were from Atl. Hell, they did 100 TV appearances by then, and TLC were the same.

I think Outkast are indeed that of the ATL hip-hop. They sound like nothing before or after, so I wouldn't even count them as anything. Kriss Kross/JD is pretty much the template for the ATL sound.

You know what - I think a spinoff should be is Oooh On the TLC Tip a hip-hop album or R&B album
