It's based off US census statistical data in regards to which cities are the most miserable in terms of crime, percentages of unemployed/employed people, low household incomes, lack of healthcare, bad commutes, poverty, poor housing conditions & drug addiction.

They researched over a 1K cities and these ones based on the stats are the most miserable.
