Ain't nobody got time to read all that. Plus, he wrote it in 18th Century English which has most people thinking WUT?

The Clizziff Nizzotes.
Basically, he starts it saying that the Americans did the right thing and worked hard to fight against England because they were being oppressed as colonists. He didn't want to start off his speech on a negative note.
Then, he goes into the injustice that the Blacks went through in the beginning of American history, and were currently going through in 1850s America. He was bashing slavery of blacks.
The Civil War had not occurred yet. It would happen 9 years later.
The Emancipation Proclamation was signed 11 years later in 1863

SO i read 3 of the 5-6 parts, i'll go back and read the other's because the ether is pretty dam pure. Not only that but anyone wanting to learn how to frame an argument should really pay attention to how this speech is constructed. Very well done.

I will say this though, as this was written in 1852 can we agree that a few things have changed in regards to the "freedom" and justice all people receive in this country? I'm not saying everything is 100%, nor am i saying that now is the time to stop pushing towards that 100%, but at some point in order to enjoy the "freedom" that this nation was founded on you must embrace the nation no?

At what point, if ever there be a point, do minorities embrace the blood shed for the rights we enjoy today, not only the blood of other minorities, but of those who founded this country (not that there was no minority blood shed in that first conflict either)?

Douglas went so far as to call the founding fathers of this country great men, do we disregard parts of his very message when it suites our argument only, or reconcile the fact that though they were of different color those "white" men in that room in fact founded the very country you're in NOW and placed the framework for the very rights you enjoy NOW?
Fellow Citizens, I am not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were brave men. They were great men, too-great enough to give frame to a great age. It does not often happen to a nation to raise, at one time, such a number of truly great men. The point from which I am compelled to view them is not, certainly, the most favorable; and yet I cannot contemplate their great deeds with less than admiration. They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for, I will unite with you to honor their memory.

I wonder would Douglas celebrate the fourth today?
Allow me to say, in conclusion, notwithstanding the dark picture I have this day presented, of the state of the nation, I do not despair of this country. There are forces in operation which must inevitably work the downfall of slavery.

"The arm of the Lord is not shortened," and the doom of slavery is certain. I, therefore, leave off where I began, with hope.

Didn't even read, but going off the cliffs a couple people have dropped...

July 4 is no one's personal independence day. Its the day our country came into existence as its own entity. Shouldn't we be happy about that? I am pissed off about a great number of things in our country. But if I didn't appreciate being an American I wouldn't live here.
