Google’s Whisk AI generator will ‘remix’ the pictures you plug in​

Google has announced a new AI tool called Whisk that lets you generate images using other images as prompts instead of requiring a long text prompt.

With Whisk, you can offer images to suggest what you’d like as the subject, the scene, and the style of your AI-generated image, and you can prompt Whisk with multiple images for each of those three things. (If you want, you can fill in text prompts, too.) If you don’t have images on hand, you can click a dice icon to have Google fill in some images for the prompts (though those images also appear to be AI-generated). You can also enter some text into a text box at the end of the process if you want to add extra detail about the image you’re looking for, but it’s not required.

Whisk will then generate images and a text prompt for each image. You can favorite or download the image if you’re happy with the results, or you can refine an image by entering more text into the text box or clicking the image and editing the text prompt.

In a blog post, Google stresses that Whisk is designed to be for “rapid visual exploration, not pixel-perfect edits.” The company also says that Whisk may “miss the mark,” which is why it lets you edit the underlying prompts.

In the few minutes I’ve used the tool while writing this story, it’s been entertaining to tinker with. Images take a few seconds to generate, which is annoying, and while the images have been a little strange, everything I’ve generated has been fun to iterate on.

Google says Whisk uses the “latest” iteration of its Imagen 3 image generation model, which it announced today. Google also introduced Veo 2, the next version of its video generation model, which the company says has an understanding of “the unique language of cinematography” and hallucinates things like extra fingers “less frequently” than other models (one of those other models is probably OpenAI’s Sora). Veo 2 is coming first to Google’s VideoFX, which you can get on the Google Labs waitlist for, and it will be expanded to YouTube Shorts “other products” sometime next year.

“Pre-training as we know it will unquestionably end,” Sutskever said onstage. This refers to the first phase of AI model development, when a large language model learns patterns from vast amounts of unlabeled data — typically text from the internet, books, and other sources.

“We’ve achieved peak data and there’ll be no more.”

During his NeurIPS talk, Sutskever said that, while he believes existing data can still take AI development farther, the industry is tapping out on new data to train on. This dynamic will, he said, eventually force a shift away from the way models are trained today. He compared the situation to fossil fuels: just as oil is a finite resource, the internet contains a finite amount of human-generated content.
“We’ve achieved peak data and there’ll be no more,” according to Sutskever. “We have to deal with the data that we have. There’s only one internet.”

Next-generation models, he predicted, are going to “be agentic in a real ways.” Agents have become a real buzzword in the AI field. While Sutskever didn’t define them during his talk, they are commonly understood to be an autonomous AI system that performs tasks, makes decisions, and interacts with software on its own.

Along with being “agentic,” he said future systems will also be able to reason. Unlike today’s AI, which mostly pattern-matches based on what a model has seen before, future AI systems will be able to work things out step-by-step in a way that is more comparable to thinking.

The more a system reasons, “the more unpredictable it becomes,” according to Sutskever. He compared the unpredictability of “truly reasoning systems” to how advanced AIs that play chess “are unpredictable to the best human chess players.”
“They will understand things from limited data,” he said. “They will not get confused.”

On stage, he drew a comparison between the scaling of AI systems and evolutionary biology, citing research that shows the relationship between brain and body mass across species.

Seven large AI factories spread across Europe: they should guarantee our continent a leading position in artificial intelligence. The European Commission has released €1.5 billion to realize this ambitious project. But if we want to compete with countries like the U.S., more is needed. “Powerful cloud computing and significantly more funding from business,” for example. IO+ interviewed AI expert Maarten Sukel, PhD, from the University of Amsterdam. He is the author of the book The AI Revolution and the founder of the company The AI Factory.

The AI revolution can be seen as a modern counterpart to the industrial revolution. Steam power in the 18th century was a systems technology that radically transformed society. AI has similar potential.

And so the continents are vying for a leadership position. The seven AI factories being built thanks to the €1.5 billion investment from the EU are a step toward making Europe competitive on the world stage. They should provide access to the massive computing power that startups, industry, and researchers need to develop their AI models and systems, such as European large language models or specialized vertical AI models targeting specific sectors or domains.

€1.5 billion for AI: nice step, but not enough


A nice step forward. However, much more is needed in Europe. Although the EU funding makes for a nice headline, it is important to put it in perspective, the researcher believes. “€1.5 billion sounds like a huge amount at first glance, but if you divide it over seven projects it's not too bad in proportion.” Microsoft recently invested €4 billion in French cloud and AI projects; considerably more than the European Union invests in this case, despite the EU being a collaboration of 27 member states.

It is not at all comparable to the investments we see in the US. “There, investment comes mainly from industry, whereas in Europe most of the money for AI development comes from government. Historically, public investments have been far from successful.” Between 2018 and 2020, AI investment in the EU increased. Yet the gap between the US and EU more than doubled over the same period (€10.7 billion EU, vs. €21.1 billion US), in both the public and private sectors.

Standing on its own two feet


Funding is essential, Sukel explains, because it is needed to scale up three crucial aspects of AI in Europe: computing power, access to data, and the development of advanced algorithms. Computing power - crucial, since AI models require intensive processing power - is now being worked on with the series of AI factories. Data can be partly taken from the Internet. Sukel explains that the biggest problem in Europe is the limited availability of powerful cloud computing infrastructure. Cloud computing refers to storing and processing data on servers accessible over the Internet, rather than on local computers or physical servers. “The big players, such as AWS, Google, and Microsoft, dominate the field, while European initiatives remain small-scale. This leaves us dependent on American companies.”

Interestingly, however, the development of increasingly large language models seems to be stagnating. Instead, the focus is shifting to smaller, open models accessible to all. “This trend offers opportunities for Europe to stand on its own two feet,” said the scientist.

Investing in education


That sounds hopeful. But there are other challenges facing Europe. One is the need to invest heavily in AI education. Without enough scientists, engineers, and experts who understand and can apply this technology, even the most advanced computing power will remain untapped. “Europe has excellent researchers, but many of them are quickly snatched away by U.S. tech companies. As a result, Europe lacks companies that know how to turn this knowledge into successful business models.”

Privacy obstacles


Another well-known obstacle is strict laws and regulations, such as the GDPR, or the new AI Act: typically European values that slow down innovation, Sukel said. “For applications such as online advertising, such regulations are well justified, but in sectors such as healthcare, where AI can save lives, more flexibility is needed. It is important to strike the balance: ensure privacy, but at the same time create space for data-intensive innovations.”

By making datasets available, more companies and agencies can contribute to developing AI solutions. Take, for example, Kaggle: a platform where users can download datasets and participate in competitions to develop the best algorithm. This platform often focuses on commercial applications such as efficiency in purchasing or advertising. But this same concept can also be applied to societal challenges. From such competitions, in turn, new talent comes rolling in to work at AI companies. “It would be good to have a European-focused alternative."

Announcing the Genesis project — after a 24-month large-scale research collaboration involving over 20 research labs — a generative physics engine able to generate 4D dynamical worlds powered by a physics simulation platform designed for general-purpose robotics and physical AI applications.

Genesis's physics engine is developed in pure Python, while being 10-80x faster than existing GPU-accelerated stacks like Isaac Gym and MJX. It delivers a simulation speed ~430,000 faster than in real-time, and takes only 26 seconds to train a robotic locomotion policy transferrable to the real world on a single RTX4090 (see tutorial: 🦿 Training Locomotion Policies with RL — Genesis 0.2.0 documentation).

The Genesis physics engine and simulation platform is fully open source at GitHub - Genesis-Embodied-AI/Genesis: A generative world for general-purpose robotics & embodied AI learning.. We'll gradually roll out access to our generative framework in the near future.

Genesis implements a unified simulation framework all from scratch, integrating a wide spectrum of state-of-the-art physics solvers, allowing simulation of the whole physical world in a virtual realm with the highest realism.

We aim to build a universal data engine that leverages an upper-level generative framework to autonomously create physical worlds, together with various modes of data, including environments, camera motions, robotic task proposals, reward functions, robot policies, character motions, fully interactive 3D scenes, open-world articulated assets, and more, aiming towards fully automated data generation for robotics, physical AI and other applications.

Nvidia brought GPU acceleration to robotic simulation, speeding up simulation speed by more than one order of magnitude compared to CPU-based simulation. This brought numerous amazing robotic skills to life by leveraging large-scale GPU-parallelized simulation. Genesis pushes up this speed by another order of magnitude. Note that the speed improvement is achieved with no compromise in simulation accuracy.

The new Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking model (Gemini version of GPT o1 that takes a while to think before responding) is very nice and fast and now available to try on Google AI Studio 🧑‍🍳👏.

The prominent and pleasant surprise here is that unlike o1 the reasoning traces of the model are shown. As a user I personally really like this because the reasoning itself is interesting to see and read - the models actively think through different possibilities, ideas, debate themselves, etc., it's part of the value add. The case against showing these is typically a concern of someone collecting the reasoning traces and training to imitate them on top of a different base model, to gain reasoning ability possibly and to some extent.
