The absence of Funk's influence is a big reason for the disconnect between old and new Hip Hop.

I’m not talking about slam dancing, I’m talking about that jumping up and down in place, fall walking around the stage dope fiend lookin shyt indie rock nikkas do and Kanye bought to hip hop.

You and your butt buddy ain’t derailing this thread breh.

Give up.

slam dancing came from the cac mosh pit. You're not going to juelz your way out of that reality

he arrival of the mosh pit as a staple at hip-hop shows is a development that has long been foreshadowed. Although mosh pits have their roots in the punk/hardcore scenes of the early ‘80s, they were initially introduced to hip-hop audiences through the Beastie Boys—who started their careers as a punk band before becoming popular as rappers—and unlikely crossover tours, like the double bill featuring Public Enemy and Anthrax, which followed the success of their 1991 collaboration, “Bring the Noise.” In the years that followed, mosh pits have continued to pop up sporadically within hip-hop, receiving perhaps their largest boost from Onyx, whose 1993 hit song “Slam” was a direct allusion to “slamdancing,”—an alternate term used to describe moshing in the ‘90s—and led to an iconic music video, which featured the members of the group rapping in the middle of an animated mosh pit.

In retrospect, the popularization of the hip-hop mosh pit may very well turn out to be one of the most enduring pieces of Onyx’s legacy, because in the years that followed the success of “Slam,” mosh pits began making periodic appearances at hip-hop shows for a variety of artists, including Wu-Tang Clan, Busta Rhymes, M.O.P. and many others. Admittedly, there is no comprehensive database which documents every time this occurred, but internet research seems to indicate that—even if you overlook the brief cultural obsession with Limp Bizkit-esque rap-rock (a good policy to apply across the board)—there has been a steady diet of moshing throughout hip-hop’s history.

Nah googler, I’m aware where slam dancing comes from.

I’m also aware how much Slam popularized Onyx with whites and turned them into damn near a novelty act amongst black folks, although they continued to make dope music and tried to seperate themselves from Slam for years.

That’s not what this thread is about.

Does this musical inspiration sound like its coming from black sources to you :comeon:

that shyt ain't even popping...these are undeniably "black" in their source

Stir Fry by the Migos is the funkiest song right now on the radio

there is plenty of funk to be found (/soul/jazz/gospel) in new hiphop but the difference is that it's synthier than olderschool hiphop which was more obviously rooted in acoustic drums and bass which was also the sound to boom bap rap and disco rap. The newer shyt is synthier but based in the same sounds

XXX ain’t popping? :mjlol:

That XXX guy is popular as fukk among the next gen. You should do your research.

Those songs you named aren’t the main types being played other than Drakes hotline bling which he stole from Dram who made it off of a Mario soundtrack and Future Mask Off who had a phase as a hot song but has no longetivity because most of his soundtracks don’t be sampling off of old school so that was his rare song doing that.

I think this has to do with two things. 1) Sample-based production really overused a lot of stuff to the point where it was and is a lot harder to create anything fresh that someone else didn't already flip, maybe even in the same way another producer would do it, without knowing. 2) It's increasingly difficult and expensive to get samples cleared. There will never be another Bomb Squad. De La Soul's first 4 albums could probably never be made now.

Close thread.

I always wondered where the new rap generations “trap” sound and production came from? If it didn’t derive from older black music (funk) or even 90s early 2000s rap then where?

A lot of new rap is taking influence from rock indie and punk
That trap sound came straight from Hip-Hop, 90's Midwest and Southern Hip-Hop to be exact.

Most hits aren’t from black sources so nice try naming a few exceptions. :sas2:

Migos had a good while before they took off. They were even know to be complaining a lot about their lack of success before making it big.

XXX was popping out the gate and blew up while he was in jail even.

So yes XXX is a big name out there in the new rap scene. :mjlol:

Debut album:

Migos Number 17 billboard

XXX Number 2 billboard.

Take those receipts cuz they are out there:sas1:

The album received polarizing reviews but fared well commercially, charting at number two on the US Billboard 200[5] while selling 88,000 units in its first week of sales. It also performed well internationally, charting highly in numerous European countries.

vs

Migos

Migos had a huge year in 2017.

The numbers back this up. Their studio album Culture went platinum, entering the charts at number 1, and spending 29 weeks in the top 20. The album’s lead single “Bad and Boujee” became the group’s first ever number 1 single—remaining there for 3 weeks. In North America, they sold 12.5 million singles and albums, and charted in the top 10 in 17 countries.

They also impacted internet culture in a big way. Takeoff’s “Do I look like I was left off Bad & Boujee?” became a meme, spawning hundreds of images and videos, and the impression that Takeoff was the least likely to pursue a solo career. Just as that meme began to lose steam, a petition to add Quavo to the national anthem surfaced, propelling the group into the headlines again.

Culture wasn’t their debut album.

Their debuit album I posted with receipts didn’t do better than XXXs. They got to culture after a good while of trying and complaining.

X wins by passing them out the gate and even blowing up in jail so he couldn’t hype himself. :sas1:
