The absence of Funk's influence is a big reason for the disconnect between old and new Hip Hop.

Without James Brown, there is no Michael Jackson. There is no Hip-Hop. There is no Funk. There is no modern Soul. This dudes responsible for more genres and pop styles than anyone else in history.

As much as I try to avoid labels like "greatest this" or "greatest that," by every measure as an all-around
modern musician, innovator, and entertainer, it is hard to consider anyone above James Brown.

I got it: hip hop is missing HORNS nowadays.

It's the reason I go back to MJ, James Brown, Curtis, Marvin, Sly, Parliament, Kool & the Gang, Commodores, Earth/Wind/Fire all the fukking time.

As I mature, I realize how fukking profound a well placed horn arrangement is. And I continue to search for music that's as wavy as that. :banderas:

Its beyond Hip Hop missing horns.

Maybe we're now realizing what happens when whole forms of artistic music expression are abandoned.

Beautiful expressions like young brehs playing jazz, soul, r&b and funk with precision after dedicated
practicing. That left the culture. It was devalued.

It's crazy cuz I talk about this same shyt with my circle... What tracks being made in this current states or even the past 5/10 years is sample worthy, or will have that "OH that's my shyt!" :flabbynsick: effect on us down the line?

I think you can throw R&B(Genuine), Oldies but Goldies, Reggae and all the shyt that made Hip Hop so unique right along with the Funk...

The absence of sampling alone is kinda crazy... We got so many classics due to brehs being inspired by outside music... These dudes not only have no connection to the old shyt... There's little to no current shyt that'll even be sampled in years to come.

I noticed Joey Bad Ass and Smoke DZA sampled Guess Who's Back and Lucci sampled Cam/Ye Down and Out just browsing thru Tidal and that's dope...but that's rap sampling rap... But it's also ill cuz that'll prolly be the formula we see from now on vs the older rappers tapping into diff genres.

Crunk as a whole was really a spiritual successor to funk as well when you think about it...the "to windows to the wall" chant on Get Low is straight out of some Parliament shyt in '76...it's just funny when you have these curmudgeons trying to use "funk" as a proxy to cry about contemporary music like they have for literally decades at each step of development, knowing that they would never make that acknowledgement

facts

crunk is also probably the closest hiphop to early blues that was for dancing in the wild juke joints with it's repetitive riffs (beats in crunk) and chanting lyrics

I know it's personal preference, but I would prefer to listen to all of the above before...

ehh

this track would be a hit with the 30 & up crowd if you replace this freak parody with a good rapper(or at least an authentic street cat with mic presence & charisma)

that's the disconnect. not the beats.

in D.C., we have a genre of music called Go-go. To put it in the simplest description, it's basically a band, playing live instruments. Some of which are caribbean instruments like steel drums. It's infused with hip-hop, r&b, and soul.

I wonder if hip-hop/rap will go to original music/beat making with actual instruments. The only group to do that, I think, was the Fugees and The Roots. I believe it's the one thing hip-hop hasn't done yet in terms of how it expresses its music.

it was only natural that as more swagless rhythmless white people got into hip hop....that the music would get much less groovy. this slow ass, non rhythmic bullshyt we get today is what cacs can dance to. peckerwoods have no fukkin clue what to do with 95 BPM

All it take is a new rapper who independent and ALREADY got money to say fukk it I'll pay the residual percentage off the mixtape or song to your old ass cause I wanna make good music..

Don't act like these old artist not playing a part by tryna rape the percentages they get for having they shyt sampled..if they was real artist they'd want all the exposure they could get its an honor when kids like your shyt and it translates generations cause they'll ALWAYS go back and check out the original once they find out it was a sample

I don't like the beat.

just saying, if they put the right person on the track, it could hit the older fans in the 30-50 range.

its the south that pushed that.

blame the south, after they pushed new Orleans out. theyre the only ones down there keeping the pace up.

and lesbianest, the west & Midwest are traditionally slower too.
